In this video I’m answering a question I get a lot: can a fiber laser actually engrave slate “deep,” or are you basically just bleaching the surface? I’m using the ComMarker B6 60W MOPA and running a bunch of parameter tests—frequency, pulse settings, and the general “how hard can I push it before it looks like garbage” kind of stuff. Slate is weird because it’s not like metal where you’re cleanly removing material; you’re dealing with a layered stone that can chip, flake, and lose detail if you get too aggressive. I also walk through how I’m using LightBurn’s 3D slice mode to do 2.5D style engraves, where the depth is driven by grayscale. That lets me take designs like fossils and sailing ships and turn them into something that has actual shape instead of just a flat mark. The big takeaways: MOPA control gives you a lot of room to tune contrast vs. removal, slate rewards smaller step-by-step changes, and 3D slice can look awesome—but only if your settings are consistent and you keep the engraving clean so the detail doesn’t get muddy.
