#homelab #selfhosted #computer Your Home lab needs these two applications, Docker and Portainer. Today I am going to explain why your servers need to have Docker and Portainer installed. The importance of using containerization can't be overstressed in modern networking environments. Whether you just in a home lab or you are doing enterprise deployments learning to use containers and docker is a must have skill. We will use his repository called Pi-Hosted to get both up and running quickly. Chapters 0:00 - Introduction 0:48 - What is Docker and Portainer 3:04 - Installing Docker 4:31 - Installing Portainer 5:00 - Loging into Portainer 5:58 - Changing Default Templates 7:38 - Installing One Click Applications 12:05 - Other Things about Portainer 14:08 - Manual App Installs with Docker 19:26 - Alternative to Portainer 20:44 - Learn it the hard way We then install Pi Hosted templating system in order to get access to more one click application installs. Then we will install an application from the template engine and I will walk you through all the parts of Portainer. Portainer is just an GUI that sits on top of Docker and give you an easy way to manage your containers or applications. By leveraging both docker and Portianer for home labs we can insure that we have have multiple applications on our server, even with different dependencies. And because they are in containers well, they won't step on each others toes. I was initially intimidated by this idea, it seemed, well, hard and confusing. But I was very happy to find out, it is pretty straight forward and it can save you hours and hours of frustration by using containers.
