When most people think of backups, they think of plugging in an external drive or maybe trusting RAID to keep them safe. But in reality, that’s only one piece of the puzzle. A true backup system has to be more than just a copy of your files—it has to be layered, automated, and able to roll back when things go wrong. In this video, I break down how I built a holistic, fully automated backup strategy for my home lab. It’s not a single tool or a one-size-fits-all approach—it’s a system I designed with four key processes: Sync, Redundancy, Backup, and Versioning. Each layer does its part, and together they form a system that keeps my data safe no matter what happens. I use GoodSync, a one-time purchase piece of software that automatically syncs all of my data—servers, PCs, Macs, phones, even Docker containers—into one Master Folder. This folder becomes my single source of truth, so I always know where my data lives. Redundancy – That Master Folder is then synced to a NAS running RAID. RAID by itself isn’t a backup, but it gives me protection from drive failure. This way, the Master Folder doesn’t live on just one disk—it lives across a redundant array, so I don’t lose data if hardware dies. Backup – Next comes true backup. I use Duplicity, a Linux-based backup tool, to create incremental backups of the Master Folder onto the same NAS. These backups are compressed, efficient, and easy to schedule. With this in place, I always have multiple copies of my data, not just redundant drives. Versioning – This is where the system becomes bulletproof. Instead of just keeping the latest copy, I use a rolling backup policy with daily, weekly, and monthly snapshots. That means if I overwrite something by mistake, or a container gets corrupted, I can roll back to a previous version without losing everything. Each part solves a different problem: GoodSync makes sure everything is captured and in one place. RAID protects me from drive failure. Duplicity ensures I have real backups, not just redundancy. Versioning gives me restore points, so mistakes or corruption don’t take everything down. Put together, this creates a workflow that runs in the background, every single day, without me having to think about it. Docker and Data Protection A big part of my setup is making sure Docker containers and their persistent data are included in the same system. Too many people forget about backing up container volumes and configs, but if you don’t, you risk losing hours of setup and tuning. With my process, container data is treated just like everything else—it goes into the Master Folder and enters the backup cycle automatically. Final Thoughts Backups are not something you can afford to ignore. At some point, hardware will fail, or you’ll accidentally delete something, or a container will break. The question is: do you have a plan in place to recover? This system has saved me more than once, and I’ve designed it to be simple, automated, and reliable.
