About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down BandLab Studio basics and the setup from top to bottom, so if you’ve never opened BandLab in your life you’ll be straight after this. BandLab is a free DAW (digital audio workstation), and I’m telling you right now it’s the best free DAW on the market—it’s not close. I walk through the main menus, settings, metronome/count-in, tempo/key, looping, master volume, saving, and how the grid and snap-to-grid works so you’re not fighting the timeline when you start moving clips around. Then I show you how I like to set up a simple two-track session: beat on track 1 and vocals on track 2. I’ll right-click to rename and color-code tracks (that’s how I keep my sessions organized), drag a beat in, and you’ll see BandLab analyze it and auto-detect BPM and key. I also explain panning (L/R), mute/solo, multitrack recording, and the control panel at the bottom where you choose your mic input, set input level, and turn on monitoring. Before I wrap, I show how to turn on AutoPitch (autotune) and the most important part: matching the scale/key (like F minor) to the beat so your tuning isn’t off.
