About This Video

In this video, I’m kicking off Day 1 of a ring string portrait that honestly had me on my toes. This is an onsite string portrait project made on a big MDF ring (4 feet in diameter), and I’m starting the Thomas Edison portrait by setting up the base and getting my materials ready for the threading work. Ring string portraits feel different from flat boards because the shape and scale demand extra planning, and that’s exactly what makes this project exciting. I’m using galvanized nails (I repurposed them from 8mm cable clips), a hammer, and black/white polyester threads (weight 60). The MDF ring is 2 inches wide with a 2 cm depth, which gives me enough structure to hold nails securely while I build the portrait layer by layer. If you’re following along, my biggest takeaway is to focus on a solid foundation first—clean nail placement and the right thread choice make the portrait phase much smoother. If you have questions while you’re building yours, drop a comment or reach out to me at crafts.genie@gmail.com. Happy crafting!
