About This Video

In this video, I show you my basics for making a couple colored square string portrait—where I combine two different photos into one clean, joined thread portrait. I work on a 24-inch green MDF board (17 mm thick) and build the portrait using nails from 6 mm cable clips, so the outline stays neat and evenly spaced. The main idea is simple: plan your couple layout first, then layer thread colors in a controlled way so both faces read clearly without turning muddy. I also walk you through my color approach using polyester thread (weight 80 / Tex 18). I use cyan, red, black, white, and yellow to create depth and separation—black for structure and contrast, white for highlights, and the bright colors to give that “colored square” look. If you’re new to thread portraits, the big takeaway is to keep your base shapes clean, don’t rush the layering, and let contrast do the heavy lifting. If you have questions while trying it, you can always comment or email me at crafts.genie@gmail.com. Happy Crafting!
