In this video, I show how I create a black halftone portrait on paper—using Don Corleone (Vito Corleone) from The Godfather as the subject. The whole idea is simple but super effective: instead of drawing with pencil or painting, I “build” the portrait by cutting out tiny halftone-style shapes on 200 GSM black paper so the white background pops through and forms the highlights. When it’s framed, the contrast looks bold and very cinematic—perfect for character portraits. I also walk you through the exact materials I use to keep the cutting clean and controlled: a sharp OLFA paper cutting knife, a self-healing PVC cutting mat, white paper for the background layer, and an A4 frame to finish it neatly. My biggest takeaway here is that paper choice and blade control matter more than anything—thicker black paper holds up better while you cut, and a good mat protects both your blade and your table.
