In this video I’m laying out what a lot of people don’t want to admit out loud: millions of engines from GM, Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai/Kia are failing for reasons that go way deeper than “oops, bad batch.” When techs tear down some of the failed GM V8s, they’re finding microscopic machining debris embedded in oil passages and bearings—basically an engine that’s on a countdown clock from day one. Then you look at Toyota: reports of power loss, knocking, overheating, and evidence that certain engines are operating at thermal levels the internals simply can’t tolerate. That’s not “owner neglect,” that’s razor-thin engineering margins meeting real-world load. Honda’s situation is the one that should’ve been impossible—bearing failures in engines with low miles and good maintenance, where the oil film collapses under certain conditions and the crank can weld itself up fast. And Hyundai/Kia’s Theta saga is the decade-long reminder that some problems are baked into an engine family: seizures, stalls, even fires, and in some cases replacements that fail again. My big takeaway is this isn’t just a mechanical story—it’s policy pressure, supply-chain fragility, rushed production, boardroom cost-cutting, and then the legal/market fallout hitting dealers, insurers, and resale values. This is what happens when modern engines are designed with no room for error.
