The Mackie M-Caster Studio launched in 2022. Is it still a good purchase today? AMAZON AFFILIATE LINK: https://amzn.to/4loJHds Price: At the time of this recording the Mackie M-Caster Studio retails for $349.99 USD, however I purchased mine from Musician’s Friend for just $69.99 USD. Inside the box I received: The unit 1 USB cable Universal power supply Quick Start Guide Their Website says you should get: USB cable Universal power supply 1/8” TRS / Aux cable 1/8” TRRS cable (for smartphones) Build: The M-Caster Studio has a plastic, but sturdy build with a good deal of heft to it (at 1.5pds) and a footprint much larger than I anticipated. Since its release I was expecting the device to be more in the range of the PodTrak P4 so you can imagine my surprise when I took it out of the box (8” x 5.1”) I was happy to see the color screen and vibrant meters come to life when I plugged it in. Speaking of colors, the unit has RGB at the bottom and around the feet. The plastic knobs have some give to them (especially the smaller ones). I even found a makeshift mute functionality that I’ll talk about later. Layout Back: ⅛” headset microphone jack (1) combo jack 48v phantom power button ⅛” instrument input USB C connection for phones and computers ⅛” cell phone input (with built-in mix minus) ⅛” headphone jack ⅛” monitor out jack Power jack Force update hole Layout Top: Navigation knob (which can be turned or pressed) Menu and home buttons Color screen Sound pad volume knob 4 sound pads (2) FX knobs (2) Contour knobs (3) Input selector switches (mic or headset - computer or instrument - cell phone or bluetooth) (3) Volume knobs 00:08 Mackie M-Caster Studio price 00:23 Inside the box 00:48 Build quality 01:24 Ports, switches, and buttons 02:24 Features 03:14 Menu deep dive 07:10 Shure SM7B - M-Caster Studio gain 07:58 Pros 11:28 Cons 16:40 Notes for the M-Caster Studio 17:15 Overall thoughts M-Caster Studio Features: 24-Bit 48kHz With ContourFX, you get sound-shaping and enhancements. And with StreamFX, you can add fun voice-changing effects. Bluetooth® connectivity allows for both sending and receiving audio Connect directly to your smartphone’s headphone jack to both send and receive audio Automatic Mix Minus ensures that any call-ins hear only you and not themselves Color display Built-in Sampler allows you to transfer and store audio files directly on M•Caster Studio (with 3GB of internal storage) and trigger them via 4 dedicated buttons USB loopback is available in version 1.0.67. RGB LED strip with 15 user-selectable colors M- Caster Studio Menu Dive: Contour FX Bluetooth Sampler Lighting Utility Tests: Does the M-Caster Studio have enough gain for the Sm7B? Loopback Pros: Solid screen with good visible meters (we’ll come back to that) 4 sound pads with dedicated volume knob (we’ll circle back here as well) I do like that you can hit the sample sound pad buttons and make the SFX stop (when in oneshot mode) You can fire off multiple sound pads at the same time Menu and Home buttons Updating the firmware Universal power supply USB loopback addition in version 1.0.67 Makeshift mute button for main microphone Headphone out is loud I love the RGB lighting and settings Cons: Missing specs Terrible gain Missing accessories Shipping condition Lacks onboard recording Either or functionality No dB levels on the meters knobs have a bit of give to them Sound pads don’t always trigger on first press Converting sound pad sounds didn’t work for me Support email (my messages got bounced) Notes: Sound pad samples must be 24-Bit 48kHz Go to their main website to obtain firmware I did a Google search and the location that came up wouldn’t allow me access Overall: While the M-Caster Studio is a mostly competent interface, the shipping issues, the lack of accessories in the box, and the either or functionality makes it a device I can’t possibly recommend for $349.99 USD. At a sub $200 range I’d give it a try (which I did). But there are simply cheaper, and better, solutions out there compared to the M-Caster Studio. So no, the M-Caster Studio is not worth the purchase after being on the market this long.
