BUY: SHURE SM7B: https://amzn.to/3VjOemf SHURE MV7X: https://amzn.to/3K0PbgU RODE PODMIC USB: https://amzn.to/46Bppse SAMSON Q9X: https://amzn.to/3Vdii2Z ZOOM ZDM-1: https://amzn.to/4pnNv0Z MOVO UM6: https://amzn.to/4n3iPAL ELGATO WAVE DX: https://amzn.to/4n4iTAn FIFINE TANK1: https://amzn.to/4nePZxa For the entirety of my 19 years of podcasting, the Shure SM7B has stood alone at the top of the heap as the most visible podcast microphone. Today, we are spoiled for choice, so if you don’t want to spend $400 on a microphone you don’t have to. All the microphones I talk about in this video are dynamic mics. #1 If you feel like you need the Shure brand but don’t want the massive price tag, the Shure MV7X is an excellent option. Price: $199 US Frequency Response: 50Hz-16kHz Sensitivity: -55 dBV/Pa #2 If the Shure brand isn’t what you’re after, but you want a brand you can trust, look no further than the RODE PodMic or in this case PodMic USB. The PodMic and by extension PodMic USB offers, if not the best, then one of the best builds in all of microphone manufacturing. The versatility of the PodMic USB is what sets it apart. Price: $209 US Frequency Response: 20Hz-20kHz Sensitivity: -57 dBV/Pa Extras: USB and XLR connectivity #3 The Samson Q9X burst onto the scene after its more versatile sibling the Q9U had paved the way. The Q9X is minus the USB connectivity of the Q9U at a cheaper price point. Price: Suggested $139.99 Currently $99.99 Frequency Response: 50Hz-20 kHz Sensitivity: -57 dBV/Pa Extras: Mid Presence Boost Switch #4 The vaunted Zoom ZDM-1 has been my favorite budget microphone for the past several years. I’ve shouted the value of the ZDM-1 so frequently I get called a Zoom shill. Apparently those people never saw my Zoom UAC232 review. Unlike the highly criticized UAC232, the ZDM-1 is a rock-solid choice for any content creator as I think the sound is excellent for the price. Price: $69.99 US Frequency Response: 50 Hz-18 kHz Sensitivity: -54 dBV/Pa Extras: Super cardioid #5 A company that’s been making strides in the content creation world is Movo. Their response to the Shure MV7 is the Movo UM6 microphone which combines XLR and USB connectivity. The UM6 has a cool magnetic windscreen that gives a satisfying click every time it’s attached. Price: $109.95 US Frequency Response: 50Hz-16kHz Sensitivity: Is skewed due to the built-in GainCast (roughly -29dB) Extras: Requires 48v phantom power - USB connectivity - gaincast booster built-in to the mic +25dB - touch button functions on the device in USB mode #6 Elgato is probably more known for capture cards and streaming gear than their microphones. Their XLR only entry the Wave DX makes it on my list. From the unique shape, to their partnership with Lewitt, to the fact that you don’t need a windscreen, there’s a lot to like about the Wave DX. Excluding the Movo UM6 due to its built-in GainCast, the DX is the easiest mic on the list to drive. Price: $99.99 US Frequency Response: 50Hz-15kHz Sensitivity: -52 dbV/Pa Extras: The yoke orientation is switchable and it comes with a cover cap. #7 In recent months there’s been a new player in the game, the Fifine Tank1. With a rock-solid build, low-cut and mid-boost switches, and a super smooth sound, the Tank1 is an excellent entry into this category. Price: $129.99 US Frequency Response: 50Hz-15kHz Sensitivity: -59 dbV/Pa +-3db Extras: Low-cut and mid-boost, can fit RODE PodMic windscreens with some effort. 00:00 7 Shure SM7B Alternatives 00:36 Shure MV7X 01:50 Back on the SM7B 02:17 RODE PodMic USB 04:11 Back on the SM7B 04:33 Samson Q9X 05:18 Samson Q9X Mid-Boost Engaged 05:50 Samson Q9X Flat Response 06:41 Back on the SM7B 06:58 Zoom ZDM-1 08:42 Back on the SM7B 09:17 Movo UM6 11:58 Back on the SM7B 12:22 Elgato Wave DX 14:03 Back on the SM7B 14:56 Fifine Tank1 16:42 Fifine Tank1 Mid-Boost Engaged 17:17 Fifine Tank1 Flat Response 17:51 Does the RODE PodMic WS14 Windscreen Fit the Fifine Tank1 18:53 Back on the SM7B
