Fire Axe Restoration - Polished Shiny Blade, Handmade Ash Wood Handle

This time, I’m restoring an antique, heavily rusted firefighter’s axe that has definitely seen better days. The first step in the restoration was particularly tricky: the rusted bolt holding the axe together could only be loosened with the help of a blowtorch – an ironic twist, using fire to save an old firefighter’s axe! After disassembling it, the real work on the axe began. Using a heavy-duty cleaning disc on the angle grinder, I removed the stubborn rust and restored the original shape through precise metalworking. I started with rough work using the angle grinder, moved on to finer shaping with the belt sander, and used a belt file for hard-to-reach areas. The surfaces of the axe were then smoothed with an orbital sander, progressing through grits from 120 to 1200, before carefully polishing the side surfaces to a bright finish. The bolt, nut, and side pieces were also restored to bring back their antique charm. Since the original handle was beyond saving, I crafted a new one from ash wood. With great attention to detail, I cut and shaped the handle to perfectly match the axe. To finish, I added a special highlight: using a fiber laser, I engraved the German firefighter logo onto the metal surface. This emblem symbolizes the four core tasks of firefighting: Rescue – Extinguish – Recover – Protect.
