An old railroad rail — rusty, forgotten, and long out of service. In this video I transform it into a fully functional anvil, step by step, entirely by hand in my workshop. No casting, no forge, no shortcuts. Just raw steel, a milling machine, and a lot of grinding. 🎬 Want to see more of what happens behind the scenes in my workshop? Check out my second channel: ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/@ForgottenShine-BehindtheShine 🔨 What happens in this video: ✔️ Laying out the shape — Chalk and a scribe are used to mark the rough contour of the future anvil directly onto the rail. ✔️ Setting up on the milling machine — The rail is dialed in with a dial indicator; initial deviation: 0.26 mm, after alignment: 0.03 mm. ✔️ Milling all three faces — All three sides of the anvil head are milled flat and square to each other. ✔️ Drilling the characteristic holes — The holes that give the anvil its typical shape are marked, aligned to 90°, and drilled with a core drill. ✔️ Cutting the contour — The rough shape is cut with an angle grinder, then refined with files and hand sanding. ✔️ Forming the horn — The tapered point typical of an anvil is marked using a marking gauge and cut with the angle grinder. ✔️ Surface finishing — First the orbital sander, then a stainless steel brushing attachment — the result is a really clean, directional finish. ✔️ Deburring & chamfering — All edges are broken with a multi-tool and sanding file. ✔️ Sandblasting — The entire piece is blasted with corundum (0.2–0.8 mm grit) to remove rust and prep for paint. ✔️ Painting — A durable protective coating as the final step. 🔔 Subscribe so you don't miss the next build! 📌 Want to support my work?
