About This Video

In this easy home renovation video, I’m walking you through how we created a real light switch when the ceiling box had constant power (because we used to have a fan with a remote). We swapped that fan for a chandelier, and suddenly “constant power” wasn’t cute anymore—I wanted to be able to flip a switch like a normal person. So we opened up the boxes, identified which wire was feeding what (the tricky part), and then fed a new wire up the wall so we could install an old-work electrical box and add the switch in the right spot. I also share the simple way we thought about it: a switch is basically just an interrupter in the hot (black) wire. The neutrals (white) stay tied together to keep that loop going, and the grounds get bundled together so everything stays properly grounded. Biggest takeaway (and I say it a million times for a reason): always shut the power off at the fuse/breaker before touching anything—because even if a switch is “off,” something can still be hot. We’re not pros, this isn’t professional advice, but I hope seeing the process helps you understand what’s happening inside the wall a little more.
