Beezy is reactive, so my first priority is always distance and managing how long she can see the other dog. I want Beezy to notice the dog first (so she’s not just predicting treats), and then I’m proactive with games like “Catch,” “Find it,” and rewarding a simple “Look” back at me. I also keep the leash loose—if it gets tight, I stop and reset—because tension on the leash changes everything. You’ll see me use practical “in the moment” strategies: crossing the street, stepping in front to block, standing behind a car or tree, walking up a driveway, or even stepping into a neighbor’s yard if that’s what it takes to keep Beezy under threshold. I also build in “Go sniff” time, because sniffing is incredibly relaxing and helps dogs decompress after a trigger. The big takeaway is that this works—but it takes months of repetition, breathing through the hard moments, and ongoing training to keep walks peaceful and safe.
