About This Video

If your puppy is biting and nipping at your kids, you’re not alone—and it’s usually because your puppy thinks the squealing, running, and waving hands are part of a super fun game. In this video I show you simple, positive ways to keep everyone safe and teach your puppy that calm behavior around children is what pays. I also explain why the classic “say ouch and ignore” advice can work for adults, but often backfires with kids because they can’t stay still, and the movement keeps the game going. My go-to safety plan starts with teaching your child to “Be a Tree”: stand still, stand tall, hug yourself, and call for the adult. Then I calmly remove the puppy using a harness and a house line (a special leash with no loop) so I’m not grabbing at a biting puppy. From there, I show you how to use a baby gate: sometimes the adult and child step behind it for about 30 seconds with a toy ready, and sometimes the puppy goes behind it for a brief 2–3 minute reset. I also teach Red Light, Green Light to help puppies learn that kid movement predicts treats, not biting—and I share safe ways kids can help with feeding, gentle treat-taking, Kongs, and simple training games.
