Fireworks can be really scary for dogs, and I want you to plan ahead so your dog stays safe and doesn’t panic. In this video I explain why I never recommend leaving a dog outside in a fenced yard during fireworks—many dogs will jump fences trying to escape. On fireworks days, I keep a close eye on my dogs and I’ll even use a leash for every potty break, just to prevent a bolt if a sudden boom happens. I also show you what I do inside to help my dogs feel calm and secure. During the day, I use puzzle games (like the Nina Ottosson Dog Brick or the Trixie Mad Scientist) to tire them out using their own food. Then I prep stuffed Kongs ahead of time (cream cheese, pumpkin, dog food, peanut butter, fruits/veggies) and freeze them so they’re ready. At the first boom, my dogs know the Kongs come out—they run into their open crates in a quiet area with beds, blankets over top, and calming music playing. If your dog needs more support, stay home with them, cuddle under a blanket, and talk to your vet about medication if needed so your dog is truly comfortable.
