In this video I share my absolutely best tips on potty training a puppy, and it really comes down to three things: set up your space, supervise smart, and reward the right behavior. When a new puppy comes home, I want you prepared with a crate that has a divider (small enough that your puppy doesn’t want to soil the crate), baby gates so your puppy doesn’t have access to your whole house, and a puppy pen for safe downtime when you can’t watch every second. From there, I keep potty training very consistent. I go out the same door every time, take a treat with me, and go to the same potty area (walk your puppy there or carry them). I keep them in a very small area, moving back and forth, and I use a potty word. The second your puppy pees, you treat immediately and have a “puppy party.” If your puppy doesn’t go, they come back inside and go right into the crate or pen, and then we try again in about 20 minutes. If you’re using potty pads, it’s the same formula: consistency, supervision, reward when they use the pad, and refine the plan when they don’t.
