About This Video

I recently got my hands on Matter-enabled SmartWings Smart Shades, and in this video I break down what it’s like to actually live with them in a real smart home. I’ve been working toward fully automating the main level of our new home for about a year, and these dining room windows were honestly the final piece of the puzzle. I cover what you can expect from SmartWings in terms of style options (there are a ton of colors, materials, and looks), plus the big reason I finally jumped into smart shades: the price makes sense. Because these are Matter enabled, I was able to add them like any other code-based device and control them in Apple Home (and they also work with Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings). I show how I grouped multiple shades in HomeKit so they move together, and I walk through the automations I’m using right now—open at sunrise, close to 50% at sunset, and close fully at 8 PM, plus a movie scene that shuts them all the way. I also talk battery life, charging, noise level (not the quietest, but totally fine), and why I still like having a physical remote around for guests or outages. Bottom line: they look great, don’t look “techy,” and I’ve had zero connection issues so far.
