About This Video

In this video I take a first look at the brand new Flic Twist and walk you through a full setup so you can see what it’s like to actually use as a smart home controller. Flic sent me the Twist to review (not sponsored), and I share my real opinions as I test it with the stuff I actually run at home—Philips Hue, Alexa routines, and a Chromecast. The big idea is simple: it’s the reliable Flic button experience, but leveled up with a rotating dial, 12 LED indicators, and a bunch of new control modes. I cover the hardware basics (AAA batteries, magnet + adhesive mounting, rubber ring so it doesn’t slide) and then set up all four actions: single press, double press, twist, and push-and-twist. I demo a press to toggle playback on my TV, a double press to trigger an Alexa routine (like turning off my video lights), a twist to dim/brighten a Hue group, and push-and-twist with Scene Blender to fade between four lighting scenes—plus I show how you can stack actions like adding Chromecast play/pause into a scene. My takeaway: I love the design, the setup is super easy, and the control options range from simple to genuinely powerful. The biggest bummer is no HomeKit support right now (I’m a big HomeKit guy), and I also want twist controls to work with Alexa/other platforms beyond what’s natively supported. The “perfect” smart home controller still doesn’t exist, but Flic is getting close.
