About This Video

This is hands-down my favorite way to control my smart home: a custom floorplan where I just tap the exact spot of the device I want—lights, shades, even my garage door—and it toggles instantly. No hunting through dashboards, no remembering device names, and definitely no yelling at a voice assistant just to hear “some accessories didn’t respond.” The best part is the floorplan itself reflects device state, so I can glance at it and immediately see what’s on, what’s off, and what’s open. In this video I walk through three different approaches to building these smart home floorplans. First, there are scan-based options that can generate a layout from your phone—Amazon added this, and Controller for HomeKit has a really impressive version that scans as you walk through your home and even drops in furniture automatically (my results were extremely accurate). But if you want the cleanest, most refined setup, I always end up back in Home Assistant. I use picture-elements cards with images I generate, hide most icons to keep it minimal, and let the image itself show things like lights and garage door state—even when an automation triggers it. I also show how I build my floorplan images in Sweet Home 3D and then bring it all together in Home Assistant.
