Unbelievable Life Conditions In Africa's Largest Floating Village - Ganvie, Benin Republic 🇧🇯

Ganvie is one of the most unique places in Benin Republic – a large stilt village built entirely on Lake Nokoué, just north of Cotonou. Often called the “Venice of Africa,” it was founded by the Tofinu people in the 16th–17th century as a refuge from slave raids. By moving onto the lake, they created a safe haven that horses and soldiers could not reach. Today, Ganvie is home to tens of thousands of people who live almost entirely on water. Wooden pirogues (canoes) are the main way of getting around: kids go to school by boat, women run floating markets, and daily life unfolds between narrow canals and wooden houses on stilts. Fishing is the heart of Ganvie’s economy. Locals use traditional fish-farming techniques with reed fences and traps, while tourism is becoming more important as visitors come to see this extraordinary lake village. Like much of southern Benin, Ganvie is shaped by Vodun traditions, blended with Christianity and other beliefs. A trip to Ganvie usually starts with a boat ride from Abomey-Calavi, gliding past fishing nets and water birds before arriving in the village.
