Ferries crisscross the Bosphorus, carrying commuters and visitors between Europe and Asia, offering views of historic waterfront mansions and hillside neighborhoods. Food is at the heart of daily life. From simit sellers on the street to fish sandwiches by the water and rich meze spreads in traditional restaurants, Istanbul’s cuisine reflects influences from Anatolia, the Balkans, the Middle East, and beyond. Tea is almost always present, served in small tulip-shaped glasses as people talk, negotiate, or simply watch the city go by. What makes Istanbul unique is the feeling of layers: ancient walls beside modern towers, centuries-old mosques near tram lines, and quiet courtyards just steps away from the sound of traffic and seagulls.
