Traveling to a country that doesn't appear on any world maps. Somaliland is a self-declared independent region located in the Horn of Africa. Officially considered an autonomous region of Somalia by the international community, Somaliland proclaimed its independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite lacking widespread diplomatic recognition, it has established its own government, currency, and maintains relatively stable political institutions compared to its neighbors. The capital city is Hargeisa, and its population is estimated at around 4 million. Somaliland boasts a distinctive culture, deeply rooted in Somali traditions and Islamic values. The region’s economy relies chiefly on livestock, remittances from abroad, and trade through the port city of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden. In recent years, Somaliland has also sought to develop its education and infrastructure sectors, striving for further stability and growth.
