Makoko is one of Lagos’s most unique and talked‑about communities, often called the “Venice of Africa” because a large part of it is built on stilts over the Lagos Lagoon. Makoko is an informal waterfront community located along the Lagos Lagoon on the city’s mainland. Home to tens of thousands of people, it is a densely populated neighborhood where many families live in wooden houses raised on stilts above the water. Narrow wooden walkways and small canoes serve as streets and transport, giving Makoko its famous floating-city feel. The community is largely made up of fishing families, many with roots in the Egun and other coastal ethnic groups. Fishing and fish smoking are central to daily life and the local economy. Despite facing major challenges—such as overcrowding, limited infrastructure, poor sanitation, and frequent threats of eviction—Makoko is also known for its strong sense of community, resilience, and vibrant local culture. Life in Makoko is shaped by both the beauty and the hardship of living on the water. Children paddle canoes to school, local markets take place in and around the lagoon, and community ties are essential for survival. At the same time, residents struggle with environmental pollution, lack of clean water, and minimal government support. Makoko has attracted global attention from journalists, photographers, and urban planners. Some NGOs and architects have tried small-scale projects—such as floating schools or community centers—to improve education and living conditions. However, long-term solutions remain complex and controversial, involving land rights, urban development pressure, and the future of informal settlements in a rapidly growing megacity.
