I break it down the same way I do when people ask me what they should start with: do you want the biggest geckos or the smallest geckos, are you looking for a display animal that looks insane in a planted setup, or do you want something you can actually hold and interact with? Once you answer those questions, narrowing down species gets way easier. I also talk about the reality that the “perfect” gecko is different for everyone, and your enclosure plans matter just as much as the animal. If you’re planning a bioactive build, certain species shine as display geckos and really pop in a naturalistic setup, while others are better if your main goal is handling. My goal with this guide is simple: help you match the right gecko to your space, your comfort level, and what you actually want out of the hobby—so you end up with an animal you’ll enjoy for years, not a gecko you’re stressed about from day one.
