I’m only talking about speakers I’ve personally heard and used (or we’ve had in the warehouse), and I’m keeping it real: I’m not here to waffle back and forth—I’m giving you the pros and cons and telling you what I’d lean toward depending on your budget. I start with the cheapest options and work up, because it’s honestly tough to find anything under about $350 that I’d say is worth it. Everything on this list is a 15-inch, two-way option (one is a column array but still two-way). I personally like 15s for beginners because you get enough bass output to get by without a sub in a lot of situations—especially when you’re doing backyard parties, smaller events, and quick setups. I cover the Mackie Thump 15 and the Mackie Thrash 15 (and why battery power is a big deal), then step up into better sound quality with the LD Systems ICOA 15 and the EV ZLX 15 G2 (with that excellent app control). I also address the Exaton 1503 hype: it’s useful and has the best bass output here, but don’t get it twisted—it’s not an RCF-level speaker, and out-of-the-box sound isn’t the best on the list.
