Most compressors give you one visual: the gain reduction meter. In this video I show you a compressor that’s completely different—Open Compressor—because it actually lets you see what’s happening “under the hood.” I’ve been on a bit of a mission to teach compression with visual tools, and the feedback has been amazing, so when I stumbled across this plugin I was genuinely thrilled. You can literally see the threshold line against the waveform, watch which parts of the signal are above it, and then watch exactly how ratio, attack, and release change the gain reduction over time. I break compression down into two key concepts: compressors are automated volume controls, and (for typical downward compression) “too loud” is defined by the threshold. Then I show how ratio sets how much the compressor turns things down once you’re over that threshold, and why a slow attack can mean you never reach your “target” gain reduction before the signal drops back under the threshold. Release is the recovery time—and with an extreme slow release you’ll see (and hear) why even quiet parts can still be getting reduced. I also run through extra tools inside Open Compressor like the transfer curve display, knee behavior, a clipper and limiter before the compressor (with an A/B comparison), harmonic controls for odd/even color, and some advanced options like lookahead, RMS vs peak detection, optical mode, and feedforward/feedback. The whole point is: if compression has ever felt mysterious, these visuals make it finally click.
