About This Video

In this video, I’m putting self-striping yarns and ombre (gradient) yarns under a real-world crochet test—because not all cakes and color-changing skeins behave the same once you get them on your hook. I walk you through the GOOD, the BAD, and yes… the UGLY, using examples from brands many of us actually buy: Lion Brand, Caron Cakes, Red Heart, Mary Maxim, and Hobbii. I show you what the yarn looks like in the skein and what it looks like worked up, because that’s where the truth comes out. I talk about how clean (or choppy) the color changes are, whether the gradient feels smooth or looks “striped” in an awkward way, and why some colorways are just not doing you any favors—especially if you’re trying to make coordinated projects. My biggest takeaway is simple: you really want to see swatches or finished projects before you commit, because a yarn can look amazing on the label and totally different in stitches. Consider me your yarn tester guinea pig so you can shop smarter and crochet with confidence.
