Sir John Key Navigating Trump 2.0, China & New Zealand’s Role

In the first collaboration of the Centre for Geopolitics and Talking Foreign Affairs with Adil Cader, Prof. Bill Hurst and Sir John Key will discuss U.S.- New Zealand relations under Trump, U.S.-China strategic competition, and the future of multilateralism in the region. About the speakers: Sir John Key served as New Zealand’s 38th Prime Minister from 2008 to 2016. His time in office oversaw significant milestones in New Zealand’s foreign policy. This includes the affirmation of New Zealand’s nuclear-free policy and the signing of the landmark 2010 Wellington Declaration, which strengthened New Zealand–U.S. Defence ties. Since leaving office, he has served on various boards and regularly appears in the media to comment on foreign policy issues. Professor William Hurst is Chong Hua Professor of Chinese Development in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (FAMES) and Co-Director at the Centre for Geopolitics. Bill received his PhD in 2005 from the University of California-Berkeley and, following two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Oxford, held tenured or tenure-track posts at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Toronto, and Northwestern University, in addition to a fellowship at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, before coming to Cambridge in January 2021. About the chair: Adil Cader is the Founder and Host of Talking Foreign Affairs. Adil holds Masters degrees in International Relations and International Law from the University of Western Australia. He has completed Executive Education with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and serves as its Alumni Ambassador for Western Australia.
