About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the #1 thing I’m seeing that’s killing people’s tax refunds (and even making them owe the IRS): your ACA/Obamacare subsidy reconciliation. I’ve filed hundreds of returns, and the biggest issue keeps coming back to one ā€œlittle barā€ on the Marketplace Form 1095-A. If you’re on a Marketplace plan, you cannot properly file without that 1095-A, and when the numbers are off, your refund gets eaten up fast. I walk you through the three key columns on the 1095-A: what your plan actually costs (monthly enrollment premium) and what the government paid on your behalf (advance premium tax credit). The problem usually comes from estimating income wrong on your application—either underestimating or overestimating—because your subsidy is based on that estimate. If you received more subsidy than you should’ve, you may have to pay it back on Form 8962, and that repayment shows up directly against your refund. I also explain repayment caps and why this matters even more going forward. Depending on where you fall on the federal poverty level, you may be capped this year, but I’m warning you: if those caps go away, you could be on the hook for the full difference. If you want help avoiding surprises, book a free 1-on-1 call with me.
