About This Video

In this video, I do the ultimate battle between an EPO and an HMO—two of the four ACA Marketplace plan types—and I break it down fast: flexibility, network rules, and cost. I explain what each acronym actually means (EPO = Exclusive Provider Organization, HMO = Health Maintenance Organization) and what you’re really signing up for when you pick one over the other. The big idea is simple: more flexibility usually means more cost, and less flexibility usually means lower premiums. I walk you through the real-world differences. HMOs are usually the most basic and the cheapest, but they come with the least flexibility—smaller networks and, most importantly, you typically need referrals to see a specialist. With an EPO, you generally don’t need referrals, which saves you time and hassle, but you’ll usually pay a little more. Either way, both HMO and EPO plans require you to stay in-network (out-of-network coverage is typically a PPO/POS thing). My takeaway: ask yourself how much you’ll actually use the plan. If you’re only going to the doctor once or twice a year, don’t overpay. But if you have higher usage—like managing something ongoing—you may want to “invest” in a better EPO setup. If you want help picking the right plan and avoiding surprises, book a free call with me and I’ll guide you through it.
