In this video I share my thoughts on the impact of AI on software engineering—specifically whether it’s still worth pursuing this career. I’m speaking purely from my perspective as a software engineer and an AI user (not an AI engineer), and I’m mostly talking about LLM-based tools like ChatGPT and Devin. Historically, tech tends to abstract away tedious or complicated work, giving us more time to think, which then leads to the next wave of innovation. That’s why I see AI as another loop in that cycle: a tool that augments what we can do, rather than a decision-maker that replaces us. I also talk about why software engineering goes way beyond “just writing code.” Good engineers solve problems, think critically, understand (and sometimes predict) requirements, communicate well, and deliver outcomes. AI can help with coding, but it still needs skilled guidance—especially for edge cases and anything that isn’t simple or well-documented. The job market impact I’m most willing to believe is fewer entry-level and mid-level hires for the same amount of work due to efficiency gains, but at the same time we’re moving toward more digital products and more AI integrations, and you can’t productionize or maintain that without engineers. The bigger potential threat, in my opinion, is AGI—not LLMs—because that’s where the conversation changes for basically every profession, not just ours.
