In this video I break down what a vocal chain actually is, because a lot of people hear the term and think it’s just plugins. A vocal chain is everything your voice travels through before it gets recorded into your DAW—hardware and software. I start at the point of entry (the microphone), then talk about how your vocal gets captured, sent through an XLR cable, and hit a preamp. At its most basic, the preamp takes that low mic output and boosts it up to a stronger line-level signal. From there I explain the role of compression—how a compressor reduces the dynamic range so the loud and soft parts get closer together and the vocal feels more “scrunched” and controlled. Then it hits the interface, which is the device that converts your analog vocal into digital data so your computer can actually read and record it. After that, we’re inside the DAW: I’m recording to a vox track and routing into an aux where the real shaping happens with software. I walk through the kinds of tools I use on that aux: a gate to keep background noise out, FabFilter Pro-Q for EQ (cutting low end and harsh frequencies), a Distressor-style compressor, an airband EQ for shine, exciters like a revival tool, a trimmer if the level’s too hot, a de-esser to tame sibilance, and Fresh Air by Slate Digital (free) to add that final clarity.
