How do you use the AstroLab 37 with the MPC for a dawless cook up?

I run the AstroLab 37 into the MPC and play everything over MIDI first, then I print it to audio. Once it’s audio, I can start treating it like a real record—mute stuff, arrange, and add effects. I keep the MIDI tracks at the top so if I want to change the sound later, I can do that without replaying the part.

What’s new in the Arturia AstroLab update you used in this video?

Arturia added more Pigments controls, and that’s a big deal. Now I can take my user presets from Pigments and load them inside AstroLab, so I’ve got crazy sounds ready without opening a computer. It’s a super clean way to stay hardware but still have modern sound design.

Why do you record MIDI parts to audio on the MPC instead of keeping everything MIDI?

Because it’s fast and it keeps me in the flow. These new MPCs make it stupid easy to print to audio, so I’ll play the part, record it in, and move on. The MIDI stays there as a safety net in case I want to swap the preset later.

What effects did you use to make the beat sound bigger?

Air Ether and Air Sprite—those two are crazy. Ether gives me that space and movement, and when you turn it on you instantly hear the beat come alive. Sprite is fire for adding that extra texture and vibe so the sounds don’t feel dry and cut off.

How do you decide how many sounds to use in your beats?

I don’t be trying to stack a million sounds—most times I’m good with a few strong parts. People overdo beats way too often, and you don’t have to. Add a few sounds, get the bounce right, and let an artist do the rest.

How do you place your kick with the 808 on MPC?

I go into arranger mode, look at the 808 pattern, and follow it. Instead of guessing, I’m literally lining the kick up with the 808 hits to keep it knocking right. It’s a simple trick but it saves time and keeps the low end working together.

I’m using my Bolo 2025 kit in this one. I tell people all the time—if you don’t have it, you’re sleeping. The drums are ready to go so I can focus on the music instead of fighting sounds.
