About This Video

The other day I showed newer MPC users how to import a one-shot and spread it across the pads chromatically so you can play it like a real instrument. Then somebody asked me the real question: “Yeah, but can you actually make a whole beat with one-shots… and not just drums?” So in this video I went straight to the MPC XL and did exactly that—built the musical parts using nothing but one-shot sounds from a kit I had in there, then finished it off with my drums. I walk through grabbing sounds (piano, bells, brass/pads), turning them into keygroups with 16 Levels, and setting my polyphony so I can play chords (I usually set it to 8). I keep it simple and musical by using Pad Perform in C natural minor (I like C minor), and I talk about the main “gotcha” with one-shots: once you get too far away from the root note, certain instruments can start sounding funky—bells and percussive tones usually hold up better. After that, I drop in hats, snare, and an 808 from my Bolo 2025 kit, then I perform the beat live—no cuts—so you can hear how this method really turns out on the XL.
