About This Video

A few of y’all asked me straight up: “Can you warp your sample chops in MPC Sample?” And yes—you can. In this video I walk you through the exact way I do it when I’m sampling directly into the MPC Sample. I start by recording a loop in (I’m using my iPhone), then I find a relative tempo with tap tempo and set my sequence up (for the tutorial I keep it simple at 4 bars). From there I go into the sample, hit Tune, switch Warp to Sequence, and make sure it plays back clean before I even start chopping. After that I go to Chop and use Manual Chop because the loop isn’t perfect. I tighten the chops, lay down a quick sequence, and then we get to the main part: changing tempo without the pitch doing that weird “chipmunk/slow-down” thing. If your pitch starts moving when you change BPM, I show you the fix—hit Shift while you’re in Warp and switch it over to Time Stretch so the pitch stays the same while the loop follows the tempo. I also show the other common issue: if your loop sounds messed up, it’s usually the Beats setting being wrong. Get the beats count right (mine lands at 33 because the loop isn’t perfect) and the warp behaves the way it’s supposed to.
