The good folks at River Ranch Resort in Noel, Missouri invited me out to see what they’re all about, and we went all in over two back-to-back weekends. This one’s a little different than my normal overland content, but it’s got the same DNA: chasing the good time in the wild places in between. We hit the Elk River for a float that’s way more “lazy river” than grind-it-out adventure—pulling off on gravel bars, drifting, swimming, and watching a whole river full of people collectively exhale because nobody’s working. I grew up thinking the Buffalo River was the only way to do Ozarks floating, but the Elk is a hidden-in-plain-sight gem—about 45 minutes from northwest Arkansas—with clear water, lush banks, and a laid-back vibe. I’ll tell you straight: if you want to chill, stop a lot, and make a full day out of it, I recommend the 5-mile float. On top of that, River Ranch surprised me with how organized the check-in and bus system is, and the food… a Big Green Egg grilled steak at a private campground is not something I’ve ever experienced. The second weekend was the real “attic moment”: a glow float at sunset with my kids, glow sticks, and fireworks overhead. Overland or over water—if it’s outdoors with friends and family, you’ll find us there. That’s why I do this.
