In this video I drop a quick volcanology lesson, because a lot of the wild landscapes we drive through didn’t just “happen” — they were built by events that were once completely catastrophic. I’m talking super volcanoes: the most violent and complex type of volcano on Earth. There are only about 20 known across the planet, and most of them don’t look like classic mountains at all. Instead, they show up as huge depressions called calderas, sitting over multiple weak points in the Earth’s crust. I walk through the three-stage life cycle: magma buildup, a super eruption, and resurgence. It starts with a massive magma pocket fed by a deep pipeline from the planet’s molten interior. As the chamber grows, pressure builds and the land above it can literally rise — like what’s been measured at Campi Flegrei in Italy, where the ground lifted multiple times, including more than 6.5 feet in just two years. When the system finally breaks, you get a magnitude 8 eruption on the volcanic explosivity index, throwing over a thousand cubic kilometers of ash and rock into the atmosphere — like Taupō in New Zealand around 26,000 years ago. After the collapse forms a caldera, resurgence begins: water collects, life returns, and the terrain we camp beside today is born from that destruction.
