Today I’m building an ESP32 wireless prop controller for Halloween so you can trigger multiple 12V props without running wires all over your haunted house. I got a question from someone who wanted to tell a story in a common area and fire props in different rooms at different times—what they had was basically a controller with wires fanning out everywhere. I don’t like wires everywhere, and it’s just easier to work without them, so I used ESP-NOW to make a simple button controller that can trigger multiple receivers. In the build I use ESP32-S3 boards, three pushbuttons, and high-power MOSFET switch modules to turn 12V LED strips on and off (the LED strips stand in for props, since a lot of store-bought props are 12V). ESP-NOW is made by Espressif and lets ESP32 boards talk directly—no Wi‑Fi, no router, no internet—and it’s low-latency and low-power. I show how to grab each receiver’s MAC address, load the same receiver code onto each board, and then set up a transmitter that sends an ON command per button and automatically sends OFF after 15 seconds. The takeaway is you can scale this from a couple props to a whole bunch (up to around 20 peers) and keep your setup clean and flexible.
