About This Video

This might be the simplest pan/tilt system you can build with an Arduino and a couple of servo motors. In this video I show exactly what I used—an Arduino R4 Minima, two “996” servos (MG996R style), a joystick module, a 5V 4A power supply, and a 1,000µF capacitor—then I walk through the wiring so you can get smooth, real-time control with one joystick. I also show the basic bracket setup so the two servos are screwed together securely for pan and tilt. A big takeaway here is power: you never want to run these servos off the Arduino 5V pin. I picked a 5V 4A supply because these servos can pull a lot of current (stall current is the number that matters), and I add overhead so the system doesn’t brown out. The capacitor is there to smooth out the voltage dips and spikes that are common with servos. On the code side, I convert joystick movement into pan/tilt “speed,” update the angles a little bit each loop, and constrain the angles so you don’t smash into physical limits—especially on tilt. I also added a joystick button press that snaps both servos back to 90° for a quick center reset.
