About This Video

The default Uncanny Eyes are cool, but in this video I show you exactly how I customize them on a Teensy 4.1 with 1.28" GC9A01 240x240 TFT displays to make the eyes smaller and way more realistic. I’m still using the same basic setup (Teensy 4.1, two TFTs, jumper wires, breadboard, power supply), but I removed the gyro module for this one. I also keep the 0.1uF and 22uF capacitors across VCC and GND on each display, and I include the wiring diagram so you can match my connections and power setup. Once we’re in the Arduino IDE, I walk through the key config changes: shrinking the render size (I use 160 instead of 240), switching from the dragon overlay back to the default human eyes, and tuning iris behavior by changing Iris Min and Iris Max so the pupil doesn’t expand/contract as wildly. Since we’re drawing a 160x160 eye on a 240x240 screen, I add an offset calculation so the eyes stay centered. From there I show a couple behavior tweaks you can use depending on your build: making the eyes static by replacing the autonomous movement code with fixed values, and adding a simple “squint” by adjusting the upper and lower eyelid thresholds. The big takeaway is you can scale the eyes (128, 160, 180, etc.), swap overlays (human/dragon/goat), and dial in the motion so it fits your project and your available space.
