In this video I’m answering a simple question that’s actually pretty complicated: who is Ben Geisler? Depending on who you ask, you might call me a craftsman, you might call me an artist—but the truth is I got here by taking the long way around. I talk about how you don’t just “arrive” at good work early on; you collect missing pieces by going out into the world, stacking experiences, and letting those experiences mature the way you approach your craft. I also get into what I do as a Western saddlemaker: I build the interface between horse and rider. My goal is to build a saddle in a way that allows a purer connection—where everything fits, moves, and breathes together. Setting matters a lot to me, so I show how my process starts with the shop itself: I clean, reset, and make a blank slate so my attention can go where it needs to go. And then there are tools. I can’t synthesize a saddle without them. I talk about weight, memory, ergonomics—how tools become an extension of my arm and my will, and how that connection is what connects me to the work. The finished saddle isn’t the end; it only has meaning when it goes out into the world and becomes a living object on a living horse.
