Sweater No. 12 by My Favourite Things

Estonian knitting is known for its incredible detail, rich symbolism, and unique techniques. But what exactly makes it look so different? In this video, I take you to Estonia, a small country in Northern Europe with a population of just over 1.3 million people, and explore one of the most intricate knitting traditions in the world. From delicate Haapsalu lace shawls with beautiful nupps, to traditional Estonian mittens filled with symbolic patterns, and the fascinating technique of roosimine, Estonian knitting is full of depth, history, and craftsmanship. We’ll also look at how a new generation of knitwear designers is reinterpreting these traditions today. I’m featuring patterns by talented designers such as Aleks Byrd, Natalja Ledvanova, Raina K, Anna Kuduja, Liina Langi, and Meeli Vent, as well as the work of Nancy Bush, who helped bring Estonian knitting to a global audience, and Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi, who are deeply rooted in traditional Estonian lace knitting. I hope you enjoy! Best wishes, Annika ✨ Giveaway I’m giving away a knitting pattern by Estonian designer Natalja Ledvanova! To enter, simply leave a comment, letting me know which knitting pattern from Natalja you would like to knit. Here is a link to her design portfolio: https://www.ravelry.com/designers/natalja-ledvanova → I’ll announce the winner in a community post next week. 🎥 Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:50 Estonia 01:18 Haapsalu Lace & Nupps 03:08 Traditional Mittens 04:06 Roosimine 04:53 Cultural Meaning 06:02 Modern Designers 📚 Knitting Patterns and other resources mentioned: Estonian knitting pattern bundle: https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/estonian-knitting-patterns What I'm wearing: Sweater No. 12 by My Favourite Things https://www.ravelry.com/projects/RosemaryAndPines/sweater-no-12 Roosi Squares by Liina Langi: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/roosi-squares Heartbeat by Meeli Vent: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/heartbeat-8 more about the Roosimine technique: https://www.aleks-byrd.com/blog/2019/6/2/roosimine?srsltid=AfmBOorHMzUQWWcW-k4Y5j4fjXfqAB3dO1ye5UDvveoxE8wOjEGHz_PJ YouTube video "Estonina Roosimine Knitting Tutorial" by Aleks Byrd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke7TYCA8Fyc&t=505s Pätid socks by Aleks Byrd: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/patid-socks Sitsijakk by Aleks Byrd: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sitsijakk Pitsiline by Aleks Byrd: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pitsiline available as part of this book: https://lainepublishing.com/en-de/products/kindred-knits-patterns-from-my-estonian-family-archives?_pos=1&_sid=62c11e094&_ss=r Tuljak by Aleks Byrd: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tuljak more about this traditional folk dance: https://www.tuljak.com/blog/tantsupidu-the-dance-party-of-estonia Ilmarine by Aleks Byrd: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ilmarine Soft Loop Cardigan by Natalja Ledvanova: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/soft-loop-cardigan 5 O'clock Cardigan Long-Sleeve version by Natalja Ledvanova: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/5-oclock-cardigan-long-sleeve-version 5 O'clock Cardigan by Natalja Ledvanova: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/5-oclock-cardigan All Fall Sweater by Natalja Ledvanova: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/all-fall-sweater FrostVeil Collar and Cuffs Set by Natalja Ledvanova: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/frostveil-collar-and-cuffs-set Friendland Blanket/Shawl by Raina K: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/friendland-blanket-shawl Kuuse by Raina K: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kuuse Eerika by Anna Kuduja: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/eerika Gauthild by Anna Kuduja: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gauthild First Snow mittens by Aet Terasmaa: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/first-snow-mittens-2 book "Folk Knitting in Estonia" by Nancy Bush*: https://amzn.to/4mZpqwM book "Knitted Lace of Estonia" by Nancy Bush*: https://amzn.to/4cZISFh Queen Silvia Shawl by Nancy Bush: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/queen-silvia-shawl books "The Haapsalu Shawl" by Siiri Reimann, Aime Edasi*: https://amzn.to/4d3D91f "How to knit a haapsalu shawl"*: https://amzn.to/42HRtaG "Estonian knitting 1.traditions and techniques"*: https://amzn.to/4way0gz https://www.ravelry.com/designers/siiri-reimann 🧶 My knitting pattern designs: https://www.ravelry.com/designers/annika-scheer 🧶 Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/RosemaryAndPines 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rosemaryandpines/ 🌿 Website/Blog: rosemaryandpinesfiberarts.de image credits: The rights to the pictures shown in this video belong to the designers. my content post-production partner: https://crossxmedia.agency/ *This link is an affiliate link.
