Estonian knitting is known for its incredible detail, rich symbolism, and unique techniques. But what exactly makes it look so different? In this video, I take you to Estonia, a small country in Northern Europe with a population of just over 1.3 million people, and explore one of the most intricate knitting traditions in the world. From delicate Haapsalu lace shawls with beautiful nupps, to traditional Estonian mittens filled with symbolic patterns, and the fascinating technique of roosimine, Estonian knitting is full of depth, history, and craftsmanship. We’ll also look at how a new generation of knitwear designers is reinterpreting these traditions today. I’m featuring patterns by talented designers such as Aleks Byrd, Natalja Ledvanova, Raina K, Anna Kuduja, Liina Langi, and Meeli Vent, as well as the work of Nancy Bush, who helped bring Estonian knitting to a global audience, and Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi, who are deeply rooted in traditional Estonian lace knitting. I hope you enjoy! Best wishes, Annika ✨ Giveaway I’m giving away a knitting pattern by Estonian designer Natalja Ledvanova! To enter, simply leave a comment, letting me know which knitting pattern from Natalja you would like to knit.
