Tackling a massive 12-mile loop through the dense forests of Washington offers a perfect mix of stunning waterfalls and challenging elevation. Setting off from the Bud Blancher Trailhead in Eatonville on a classic gray Pacific Northwest afternoon, this route follows the Little Mashel River. The trail showcases a series of beautiful waterfalls carved into the ancient rock before pushing aggressively upward to conquer the Hugo Peak loop. Navigating the steep inclines and deep evergreen forests takes serious endurance and provides incredible views of the local geology. As the miles added up, this afternoon trek gradually pushed past daylight, requiring a final triumphant push through the dark with a flashlight to finish the trail.
