Old Hancock Trail: Dirt, Brush, and the Canyon Lake Oasis

The hike out on the Old Hancock Trail is a punishing mix of dry brush, limestone, and heavy sun exposure. The reward for pushing through the rocky creek beds and ankle-rolling terrain is the open water of Canyon Lake, where Waffle finally gets to experience his first swim. Located in Central Texas, the Old Hancock Trail offers a harsh contrast between barren, rocky bluffs and the shoreline of Canyon Lake. Navigating this route requires pushing through overgrown vegetation and managing off-trail bushwhacking to parallel the water. The shoreline itself presents a clash of environments, where natural wildlife adapts to the reality of human impact and discarded trash left behind.
