The drive to Kyles Landing is one of the most infamous descent roads in the Buffalo National River. It starts as a calm cruise out of Jasper, Arkansas, but once you hit the gravel, everything changes. In Part 1 of the Indian Creek series, I break down the route from Highway 74 all the way to the river bottom, showing you exactly what the road conditions look like and how to handle the switchbacks. The Route We start in Jasper, heading south on Highway 7 before turning west onto Highway 74. This section is paved and scenic, offering some of the best views in Newton County. The real work begins at the Kyles Landing turn-off (Camp Orr Road). The road immediately turns to gravel and narrows. While the warning signs are intimidating, this road is manageable for most vehicles with decent clearance if you take it slow. The final descent involves steep grades and tight switchbacks, dropping you straight into the basin. The Destination: Kyles Landing Campground located right on the banks of the Buffalo River, Kyles Landing is a premier spot for tent camping. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so getting there early is key. Note that because of the road conditions shown in this video, trailers and RVs are generally not recommended. It serves as the main trailhead for the Indian Creek Trail (Eye of the Needle), which we will be tackling in the next video.
