In this Behind the Music, we have José Luis Anderson, who goes by his artistic name, Andervel when referencing his music. The sedulous and sincere singer-songwriter and composer so beautifully explains each song played for us on Amplified, as well as, tells us a story about his musical instrument of choice. Andervel, Mexican folk music meets Iceland’s emotional landscapes. Celebrated as “a rare pearl in Spanish-language music” by Spanish-American media outlet Al Día, Andervel’s debut album “Beginners” was released in 2016. His hotly anticipated EP, “Noche,” was released in late 2020. “Noche” includes recent singles “No Sé” and “Muñequita”, featuring Icelandic artists JóiPé and Sóley. Andervel is currently working on several projects, such as composing music for the elderly, a sensitive project that pretends to help patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s; a second album that partners his sincere and timeless brand of folk-pop melodies with experimental music, in Spanish, English and Icelandic-language lyrics. Earnest, intimate, heartfelt, delicate: Andervel is the music project of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer José Luis Anderson. Born and raised in Mexico, Anderson currently lives in Iceland. Andervel acts as an homage to his family roots, his classical singing background, and his maturation in the Icelandic art scene. Music is in his blood; in his formative years, Anderson was mentored by his grandfather, award-winning opera tenor Librado Alexander. Anderson’s own music career began when he was a teenager, performing as a solo vocalist for a traditional music group on tour through Europe and the USA. Anderson subsequently founded the folk band Henry the Horse. Anderson’s dedication to family led to the formation of Andervel—a synthesis of his father’s (Anderson) and mother’s (Esquivel) last names. Andervel translates the loyalty and cares imbued through Anderson’s upbringing into songs matured through intimacy and sincerity. Anderson resides in Reykjavík where his yellow socks are infamous in the local arts scene.
