I go room-by-room and device-by-device to see what still works locally in the Home app—lights, plugs, sensors, locks, and even my Apple TV/HomePod hub setup. The goal is simple: figure out what’s truly “smart home” and what’s really just “cloud remote control.” The big takeaway is that your experience offline depends way more on the ecosystem and connection type than the brand name on the box. HomeKit accessories that talk locally (especially hub-based systems like Lutron and Hue, and Zigbee gear through Aqara) are the ones that tend to keep behaving when the WAN drops. I also dig into what happens to Siri commands, automations, and camera features when there’s no internet—because some stuff is local, and some stuff is absolutely not. If you care about reliability, this is the test you should be designing for: power and internet will fail, so your smart home needs to still feel like a home.
