Valentine’s Day is meant to be about love… right? But every year it comes with the same script: roses, chocolates, jewelry, reservations, and this weird pressure to make the day “perfect.” In this video, I unpack how one of the oldest human experiences somehow got reduced into a transaction—and how Valentine’s Day didn’t begin as a marketing opportunity at all. It began as sacrifice. I start with Saint Valentine in 3rd century Rome: a Christian priest performing marriages in secret under Claudius II, choosing God’s law over the emperor’s decree, and paying for it with his life. From there, I explain how early Christians understood love as agape—self-giving love that you live, not something you display. We also look at how the Church repurposed Lupercalia (yes, the very violent fertility festival) and how the meaning shifted over time through medieval courtly love, Chaucer, handwritten Valentine letters, and Shakespeare’s intense, costly version of romance. Then everything changes with the Industrial Revolution: mass printing makes love “efficient,” capitalism standardizes emotion, and eventually social media turns love into content and performance. My takeaway is simple: Valentine’s Day didn’t become shallow overnight—it became efficient. But love was never meant to be efficient. It was meant to be slow, intentional, and costly.
