You know that moment when you bring home a gorgeous, healthy supermarket basil, pop it on a sunny shelf, and fully believe you’re about to live your best “never-ending pesto” life… and then a week later it’s just sad and limp? In this video, I walk you through exactly why that happens (spoiler: it’s not you) and how I save it every time. The biggest issue is overcrowding—supermarkets often cram around 14 basil plants into one tiny pot, so every stem is competing for nutrients, water, and light. I show you my simple rescue routine: I take the plant out, gently (okay, it feels scary) split the root ball in half, and repot into two slightly bigger pots with fresh soil. I use a peat-free houseplant repotting mix because the drainage is stronger, then I drench the soil to remove air bubbles and let it drain through before placing it back in bright light. Then I take it one step further and “double” the payoff by propagating cuttings in water. I cut right above a node (where the double leaves are), remove big leaves to help roots form faster (and toss them into dinner—win-win), and change the water every two days. In 2–3 weeks, once roots hit about 2 cm, I pot them up—turning one supermarket basil into up to four thriving plants.
